Last Thursday, the U.S. Department of Transportation released a proposal to make black boxes – more properly known as event data recorders, or EDRs – mandatory in all light-duty vehicles.

If this sounds like yet another way for the federal government to invade our privacy, consider that such devices are already included in new cars, and since 2005 65% of new vehicles have boasted some kind of onboard recording device. Among the brands using them today are Ford, GM, Mazda and Toyota.

The government’s proposal, then, would simply make such devices mandatory. Already, another law set to take effect two years from now will require that the data collected by EDRs and the method of retrieving that data be made more universal. That rule came as a direct result of unintended acceleration cases in Toyota vehicles over the past few years.

Currently, most auto manufacturers are showing public support for the concept of mandatory EDRs, but they also say they don’t want such devices to be terribly complex, as this would cause them to be more expensive, which costs would have to be passed along to buyers.

In a story that would be almost funny if it weren’t true, Automotive News is reporting that Mazda Motor Corp. has issued a recall on 52,000 2009 and 2010 Mazda6 cars because – get this – spider webs in the emissions system might cause cracks in the fuel tank, leading to leaks.

The vehicles affected by this recall were manufactured between April 8, 2008 and February 8, 2010, and produced by the Mazda/Ford Motor Co. joint venture plant known as Auto Alliance in Flat Rock, MI.

Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 52,000 2009-2010 Mazda6 vehicles over concerns that spider webs in the emissions system could lead to fuel tank cracks and possible leaks.

According to reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is a certain type of spider that may weave a web that restricts a vent line within the emissions system. This could cause an increase of pressure inside the fuel tank, and lead to cracks, fuel leaks, and an increased of fire.

Mazda says the plan is to install a spring to prevent this kind of spider from entering the vent line.

Mazda Motor Corp’s new design chief, HIkuo Maeda, is known by the nickname “Speedy,” because of his notorious lead food, both on and off the race course. In fact, reporters from the Automotive News Japan offices believe he might be the only standing auto executive to have had his driver’s license revoked more than once. It is this notoriety as a speed demon that makes Maeda the logical guardian of Mazda’s “zoom-zoom” branding.

Of course, Maeda, who took over the design position almost a year ago, has other credits making him seem a natural heir to the brand heritage. For example, he’s the man behind the shape of the Mazda RX-8 sports car – and he’s the son of the man who designed the original Mazda RX-7. That’s a pretty impressive auto design lineage.

“I was a real car lover long before I started designing cars,” Maeda told the press, in an interview at Mazda’s headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan. He continued, “”There are lots of car enthusiasts at Mazda, but I think I’m at the top.”

And what’s his top priority? Keeping Mazda cars zoom-zooming is definitely near the peak. He races one of the company’s MX-5 Miatas, when he can find the time, and in his private garage, a Lotus Elise sits in wait. Even more, he says he wants to bring back the RX-7.

“I do have a strong yearning to revive the RX-7 during my tenure,” he said. “But in order for that to happen, we need the U.S. economy to come back, first and foremost.”

Meanwhile, Maeda is concentrating on a less racy Mazda, the Mazda5 minivan with wavy side paneling (meant to invoke fluidity). It may not be a sports car, but it’s inspired, in part, by a series of concept cars known as the Nagare, which he inhereited from his predecessor Laurens van den Acker, originally of Ford Motor Company. Of the Nagare, which means “flow” in Japanese, Maeda says, “”It is like a Japanese garden. It encapsulates nature in a restricted area. It re-creates nature in something man-made.”

If you’ve been dreaming of a Mazda6, the news is good. For 2009 the price will be set at $19,220 with the V6 jumping up to $24,800. And that’s including shipping. You’ll be able to get your hands on one at a dealership in August.

In announcing the price level, Jim O’Sullivan, Mazda North American Operations CEO said, “Bringing any new car to market at a competitive price has always been critical, but seldom more so than today. Customers are looking for that rare combination of style, dynamics, economy and a great price, and the all-new 2009 Mazda6 delivers on all levels.” (Buyers of the Mazda6 are also supporting the national economy since this is the only model Maza builds in the U.S. at a plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.)

So how’s Mazda6 doing for sales this year? Not all that poorly. In the first half of 2008 the company moved 33,063 units, a climb of 1.2 percent over 2007. As to performance, you can expect to get about 17 to 21 mpg around town and anywhere from 25 to 29 out on the road. Not the best available, but reasonable. Certainly worth of a test drive if you’re in the market for new wheels.
